What Can I Expect To Be Doing as an Engineering Apprentice?
The actual work of an engineer can vary greatly depending on where you work, or the job role you're doing.
Generally, engineers are responsible for using science and mathematics to develop solutions to problems. This could be anything from prepping steel for use in bridge construction to complex product designs using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software. The tasks you'll be doing day-to-day can be extremely varied and rewarding and what they are will depend on what type of engineering apprenticeship you are employed to do.
At East Durham College, we work closely with employers from around our region to offer apprenticeships in engineering in the following roles:
- Engineering Product Design and Development Apprenticeships
- Engineering Technician Mechatronics Apprenticeships
- Lean Manufacturing Operative Apprenticeships
- Metal Fabrication Apprenticeships
- General Welder Apprenticeships
Work & Assessments
As part of a Engineering Apprenticeship you will cover a mixture of practical and theory and you will be required to come into college on day release. You will also take part in observations. As part of the apprenticeship framework you will be required to complete functional skills in Maths & English. If you have GCSE grade C or above in Maths & English or equivalent within the last 5 years then you may be released from your functional skills.
You will be assessed throughout the course, during workplace observations and also observed within college day release.
