Science manufacturing apprenticeships come in two different levels: Level 2 Science Manufacturing Process Operative and Level 3 Science Manufacturing Technician.
Level 2 Science Manufacturing Process Operative
This apprenticeship will be found in industries such as biotechnology, chemical, composites, petrochemical, polymer, and pharmaceutical. Apprentices will interact with other science process manufacturing operatives and technicians, along with colleagues from other business functions. They typically report to a shift manager, team leader, or supervisor.
Apprenticeship Facts:
Duration of Apprenticeship: 18 months + 3 months EPA
Days in college: 1 day a week
Intake: Roll on roll off
Responsibilities:
- Produce materials and products using science-based manufacturing processes.
- Follow operating procedures. Checking and preparing materials.
- Monitor the process and resolve deviations.
- Maintain workspace.
- Quality control.
- Problem solving.
- Complete work records.
Entry Requirements:
- C/4 or higher in Maths and English.
- Employers Apprentice Criteria.
- If an apprentice does not have a level 1 in Maths and English, they must achieve this and then attempt the level 2 tests before the end-point assessment.
Level 3 Science Manufacturing Technician
This apprenticeship has two pathways: Biotechnology Manufacturing Technician or Aseptic Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing Technician. The details for both are to be confirmed.
Apprenticeship Facts:
Duration of Apprenticeship: 36 months + 3 months EPA
Days in college: 1 day a week
Intake: Roll on roll off
Responsibilities:
- Independent and teamwork.
- Take responsibility for the quality and accuracy of their work.
- Operate systems and equipment in the production of products.
- Wear specialist equipment.
- Comply with organisational safety and regulatory requirements.
- Find solutions to problems and identify areas for improving their work environment.
Entry Requirements:
- C/4 or higher in Maths and English.
- Employers Apprentice Criteria.
- If an apprentice does not have a grade C/4 or equivalent in Maths and English, they must gain both before their end-point assessment.
- Apprentices must complete a level 3 or 4 qualification in a science or technology discipline relevant to their occupation, which is recognised for professional registration by RSciTech or Eng Tech, before completing the apprenticeship’s end-point assessment.
