A Levels, BTEC Applied Science & T Level Science (ED6)
Interested in heading off to university? Then you can try out up to four different A-level subjects during the day from mathematics, sciences and computer science to arts and humanities subjects. Each session is designed to give you a flavour of the subject – especially those that you may have not studied before at GCSE, such as Psychology, Sociology and Law. For those interested in science there will be some taster sessions in the laboratories too.

Art & Design
Unleash your creative side with our art workshops. Using a wide variety of artistic techniques, you’ll have great fun getting to grips with what to expect on an art or design course here at EDC.
Beauty
Head over to our beauty salon here at the college and find out how to perform cut crease eye makeup and creative face painting.
Care
Experience life as an EDC care student. The day will give you an insight into the roles in the sector, including Childcare, Education, Health and Social Care. Our sessions will include an introduction to our courses and give you the chance to experience our real work teaching environments including activities in our mock hospital ward and specialist education and childcare room/nursery. You will also learn about a range of sensory and educational activities for children and therapeutic activities across all ages to simulate the roles of Early Years and Education and Health and Social Care Practitioners.
Catering
Visit the college’s kitchens and find out how to make the perfect cupcakes. Better still – you get to take them home afterwards (YES!).
Business/Enterprise
Have you got what it takes to pitch your business to the Dragons? We’ll find out with our Dragon’s Den-style activity, giving you a taste of what life is like as a real business professional!
Hairdressing
Get hands-on in EDC’s hair salon, and take part in our activity workshops where you’ll be plaiting and pinning up hair.
ICT
Explore the exciting world of IT in our brand-new Digital Suite. Experience our VR headsets, achieve your ‘Drone licence’ and build a gaming PC.
Media
Fancy yourself as a director? Get behind the camera and film the piece which will be performed for you by our performing arts and media students!
Music/Performing Arts
Love to dance, sing, or act? You’ll create a performance piece as part of our workshop, and get to perform it afterwards!

Uniformed Public Services
Teamwork is a huge part of working in any public service from the army to the police. We’ll put your skills to the test with our outdoor team building exercise (outside clothing required).

Electric
Learn how to wire electric circuits as you take part in our ‘Let there be light’ wiring exercise challenge!
Gas & Plumbing
How does piping work? With our Pipe circuit initials workshop, you’ll learn how plumbers create piping circuits, and how these apply to work in properties.
Engineering
- Build, rebuild and air test a steam engine.
- Strip down and replace wire feed for MIG machine.
- Balancing nails activity.
- Making a personalised keg ring.
- Demonstration of CAD & 3D printer.
Motor Vehicle
Visit our dedicated motor vehicle workshop here at The Technical Academy and find out how to perform Turbo assembly and tyre changing as well as some go-kart fun and try out our virtual reality simulator.
Taster Sessions On Offer At Our Houghall Campus, Durham
A number of these activities will be outdoors, so please dress warmly! For health & safety reasons we request you wear trousers or jeans (no rips), sturdy / waterproof footwear with a substantial sole - which you do not mind getting dirty – no trainers, heels, slip-on footwear. Please bring a waterproof coat, hat and gloves. Long hair must be tied back and all visible piercings removed.
Agriculture
See our incredible farm and try your hand at feeding and handling some of our farm livestock. Learn about the range of fantastic careers in agriculture and food production.
Arboriculture & Wildlife Management
Get a taste of exciting outdoor living – take part in tree surgery activities and learn more about how to manage the habitats of wild animals.
Animal Care (inc. Vet Nursing)
Animal Care (inc. Vet Nursing): You’ll be amazed by our incredible animal care centre! Take a tour and meet our animals (including our goats, rabbits, lizards, skunk and much more!), visit the farm and take part in several activities including animal handling and dog activities.
Vet Nursing applicants will join in the activities with the animal care applicants; there will however be an opportunity over lunch to discuss any specific vet nursing questions with one of the vet nursing lecturers.
Floristry
Fancy yourself as a florist? Get involved with our floristry workshop and learn how to make stunning floral designs.
Equine Studies
Vocational Assessment Day (as discussed at interview). Please bring as much of your kit as possible as you will be working on the yard.
