Benjamin Duncan, a former Manufacturing Engineering student at The Technical Academy, is now studying Architecture & Urban Planning at Newcastle University.
Benjamin, 22, from Coxhoe, is well on the way to fulfilling his ambition to become a qualified urban planner and loving life at university.
A former pupil at Framwellgate School, in Durham, Ben successfully studied at The Technical Academy between 2015 and 2017 on a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering gaining Distinction Star.
After leaving East Durham College Ben continued his education at Northumbria University studying on a mechanical engineering degree, however after the first year, he decided on a change of direction. So, after a year out working in industry, he secured a place studying on a degree in architecture and urban planning at Newcastle University and is now in his final year.
Ben recalls his time at East Durham College fondly. He said: “As I wanted to study manufacturing engineering, at the time, The Technical Academy was an extremely attractive proposition, and the course was really interesting too. It was a much more appealing option than A Levels but still provided a clear pathway to university which was paramount to me.
“I really enjoyed my time at college. Staff at the college and on my course were very welcoming and supportive, creating a place I was happy to learn in. And the lecturers on the course were incredible, simply incredible. It’s great that my BTEC course prepared me so well for uni.
“I’m loving life at Newcastle Uni and particularly enjoying the technical and creative side of my degree course. I’m currently deciding between pursuing a related Master’s degree or working in industry in an urban planning role."
So, would Ben recommend East Durham College and The Technical Academy? “Definitely,” says Ben. “If you want to study somewhere offering the perfect environment to nurture your education potential then look no further than EDC!”
