East Durham Sixth Form Students Celebrating Stellar A-level Results

Posted 18/08/2023

East Durham College is proud to announce their A-level students have once again achieved exceptional results this year. Two students have even secured admission to Oxford and Cambridge Universities, which is a first for East Durham Sixth Form (ED6).

Evan Taylor, who previously attended Shotton Hall Academy, took maths, further maths, biology and chemistry achieving A*AAA. He will now study Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge. Meanwhile, Bryan Marville, a former Durham Johnson pupil, is heading off to the University of Oxford to study Material Science.

ED6 students achieved an impressive overall pass rate of 99%, for those taking three or more A-levels. Additionally, a significant number of students achieved the necessary grades to get into their first-choice universities across the country.

Since opening its doors in 2012, ED6 - located within East Durham College's Peterlee Campus - has gained an excellent reputation. Over the years, student enrolment and the caliber of students have also risen steadily, as more and more students and parents/carers witness the impressive results achieved at ED6.

Head of ED6, Dr. Wanda Scott, expressed her immense pride in the accomplishments of students in their exams and during their time at ED6. The sixth forms’ tagline, "Smaller Sixth Form. Bigger Prospects," is truly reflected in the impressive results achieved, she said.

Wanda added: “This group of students faced massive challenges, due to the impact of COVID-19 which hit when they were in Year 10, including lockdowns, remote learning and cancelled GCSE exams. Despite all these obstacles, their hard work and dedication have paid off.”

Dr. Scott extends warm congratulations to all the students, with a special recognition for Evan and Bryan, who have become the first ED6 students to successfully gain admission into Oxford and Cambridge. “This is truly an incredible achievement,” she added.

The amazing grades didn’t stop there either! Riley Keenan, who joined ED6 from St. Hild's School in Hartlepool, has been accepted by the University of Edinburgh to study medicine after achieving AAB in Biology, Chemistry & Maths. And former Easington Academy pupil Molly Barnes-Tate aced it with A*A*A and will now study Biosciences at Durham University.

Overall, students achieved the following impressive grades:

  • Grades at A*-A = 22.4%
  • Grades at A*-B = 37.2%
  • Grades at A*-C = 57.9%

Suzanne Duncan, Principal of East Durham College, added: “As another academic year comes to a close, ED6 celebrates yet another successful year with outstanding academic results achieved by our students.

“At ED6, we believe in the importance of individual attention and support for each learner. Our smaller class sizes, personalised one-on-one teaching, and continued guidance are tailored to ensure that every student reaches their full academic potential.

“A massive well done to our students and the dedicated ED6 team who have supported them throughout their educational journey. We wish them all the best as they embark on the next phase of their journey.”
