A talented young agriculture student is already growing his future in the industry after receiving a Best Student in Agriculture award at the Great Yorkshire Show 2019.
Michael Hogg, 18, is studying a Level 3 agriculture course at East Durham College’s Houghall campus in Durham.
The award was presented to Michael for his commitment and passion for working in agriculture, a fact that has been recognised by his course lecturer, Rosie McGowan.
Rosie said: “Michael has displayed excellent ability and knowledge throughout his 2 years studying Level 3 extended diploma in agriculture at Houghall. Despite not growing up on a farm, Michael's passion for agriculture is clear throughout all his work. From a young age he has built up his practical experience gaining seasonal work on several farms including turkey plucking, harvest work and lambing.
Michael's practical and academic work at college is delivered to an outstanding standard and he is a pleasure to teach. This year he has volunteered to represent the college in the Next Generation Shepard competition at the NSA North Sheep event, where he came second out of all entrants in the North. Michael has recently secured and excellent full-time position at an arable, sheep and pig farm near Scotch Corner where he will be taking on responsibilities as part of a three-man team.
Michael is a fantastic role model for those wishing to enter into the agricultural industry and forge a career and we wish him every success with his new role.”
