All students at East Durham College are automatically members of the Students’ Union, which represents their views and ideas to the managers of the college, as well as organising lots of other services and events for students.
The Students’ Union has its own rules, its own budget and its officers are elected annually by the students.
The Students' Union plays an important part in your college life because we are your voice. We are here to represent your interests, whatever they are!
We try to raise awareness of issues that will affect you as students, raise money for charities by putting on events, get you to have your say about your course – what’s good or how things could be improved – as well as providing you as students with a place to come and ask questions!

Elections
The Students' Union elections take place during term 1 of each academic year. All students will have the opportunity to run for election and vote.
Keep your eyes open for more information about the elections, positions available are:
- Student Governors x2
- President
- Vice-President(s)
- LGBT+ Officer(s)
- Sustainability Officer(s)
- Events Officer(s)
Class Reps
We have a class rep system in place on every course so that there is one person in each class who is responsible for letting us, the Students’ Union, know what the class is like, what the equipment, staff and resources are like and if there’s anything that can be improved. This is a really important job and the Students’ Union hugely value class reps and they often get rewarded for their hard work with things like free food and free tickets to events. If you are interested in being a class rep or don’t know who your class rep is then speak to your tutor about it or come and see us.
Freshers' Fair
Every year, in September, the Students’ Union hosts a Freshers' Fair to welcome new and returning students to East Durham College. We invite many different stall holders to attend and talk to students about the services they provide. There's loads of really helpful free information, freebie giveaways and general guidance and advice.
Campaigns
The Students’ Union organises and runs a number of different campaigns throughout the year both directed towards the student population and also the College management. These range from anything such as sexual health week to extending library opening hours.
Trips
We try to put on a range of trips to different places throughout the year. Previous trips have been ice skating, rock climbing, and theme parks! Keep your eyes peeled for more information around college or contact the SU to find out what trips are coming up soon.
Clubs and Societies
We currently have Book Club, LGBT+ Society, Board Games Society, D&D (Dungeons and Dragons) Society - and many more. If you and a small group of other students want to set up a club or group around an interest or to raise money for charity then we can support you.
Some examples of clubs and societies are poker club, cheerleading club, drama society, Disney society – the list is endless. If you’re interested, come and have a chat with us!
